Major American Works Go to Auction

by Alyson Stanfield on April 11, 2005

Wow!
I just read in the NY Times that the New York Public Library is putting its art collection of 19 works up for auction with Christie’s (est. $50-75 million). As a former museum curator and educator, I sure hope these find their way into a public institution. But few museums have the kind of funds it will take to purchase Asher B. Durand’s Kindred Spirits or Gilbert Stuart’s portrait of George Washington.
