I love to see my newsletter subscribers getting the attention they deserve! This week’s Art Marketing Action feature artist, Nicole Strasburg, just landed the entire cover of Coastal Woman magazine. She described in an email how she got there:
I took a 14 week self employment training class a few years ago put on by a women’s non-profit. I met some gals whose business was to start a publication. Once they were up and running they had an online survey you could fill out if you were a female entrepreneur with a good story. I did this two years ago and then waited. I just kept putting myself out into the world, showing up at events, going to openings (all kinds, music, dance, store openings). At some point I bumped into the ad executive at a party and mentioned I had filled out the questionnaire and she put in a good word.
They wrote the story almost a year ago and then sat on it until they found just the right issue to include it – a women in the arts issue. They ended up accommodating me a little and pushed it the release another issue so that it would help advertise my show in January. This is the winter issue that runs Nov-Dec-Jan and my show opens at the end of Jan 06.
So – some prodding and reminding and oodles of patience. I always liken the art business to fishing, you have to keep casting your line out and then in order to get the fish to come there is a time where you have to sit patiently, quietly in the boat. It also helps to have more than one line in the water.
Patience and persistence. That’s what the art marketing game is all about. Heck, that’s what life is all about!
