Enlarge Font Size for Easier Web Viewing

by Alyson Stanfield on March 2, 2006

Deb Trotter was so frustrated with the small font on the Dear AOL petition site, that she gave up. I don’t blame her. It’s TINY. And I have pretty good eyesight!

Here’s how you can enlarge the font size for easier Web viewing, courtesy of the EPA’s Aging Intiative site:

Internet Explorer (similar for Firefox)

To view Web page text larger (or smaller):

  • You have a menu bar across the top of your screen with the following options: File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help
  • Click on View and you will see a drop down box.  Point to Text Size, and another box will open.
  • Select the font size that you prefer:  Largest, Larger, Medium, Smaller, Smallest.

Netscape

To view Web page text larger (or smaller):

  • You have a menu bar across the top of your screen with the following options: File, Edit, View, Go, Communicator, Help
  • Click on View and you will see a drop down box.  Point to Increase Font to make the text larger.
  • Click on View and you will see a drop down box.  Point to Decrease Font to make the text smaller.

Here is another one. I have found using the keyboard shortcut in Firefox a quick and easy way to change the font size up and down. Do this by holding Ctrl key down and tapping on the – or = key. Cheers, Susan

Now that we konw this trick – quick – go to your own website and try it. Does your formatting still work and does the website look nice? Does all the text grow and shrink? If you are designing your own website (or having someone do it for you) this is an important thing to test before going live. If you check out my website on firefox you’ll see I have a problem with the header text when it grows too large. Great big oops! It’s on my list of things to fix when I find the time.

Here’s the trick for Opera: Use the numeric keypad (on the far right of standard keyboards) “+” (plus sign) for enlarging the text in the active window and the “-” (minus sign) for reducing said text. Unlike Firefox, doing this will not affect any of your inactive screens (tabs).

There is no View option on my Menu bar. Just File Edit Mail Community, etc. I want to enlarge the text and the instructions say to click on the View on the Menu to get the drop down box. How do I get the View option on my menu bar

JoAnn: I have no idea what browser you’re using, but use Google to plug in the details. I’ll bet you find something pretty quickly.
