Feature Your Art in Your Home

As you know, I’m constantly on the lookout for how artists are promoting themselves. The corollary, and perhaps more important, piece to that is how they are getting results.

Today’s Denver Post ran a front page article in its “Room” section about artist Debi Story Maddox and what she has done throughout her landmark home. It’s a story written by a features writer–not an art critic–that highlights the artist and her new gallery as much as the house. I have no way of knowing how it came to be, but it could be a lesson for you.

Have you created something special around your home or someone else’s? I mean really special. Not just one installation, but an entire environment? Or maybe you live in an unusual home that you’ve turned into a work of art in itself. Sounds like a couple of good opportunities for publicity.

  • We are all in favor of artists getting their story out any way they can, of course. Over the years I have seen these sort of features on artists who have remodeled their homes to be elegant and exotic studios. The sad thing about this is that inevitably the newspaper editors opt for articles that feature big studios in fancy large houses. Artists who live in small homes, or more likely still in apartments, never are newsworthy to these editors. It is a shame, as most artists (including most really accomplished artists) live in modest quarters. So if an artist has a big budget, go for it. If not, an artist needs to use their ingenuity to find other ways to tell their story.

  • Of course, you’re right Philip. The draw for that article was a landmark property. But I have to believe that even a small property that is transformed by an artist can make headlines. Maybe not in a big newspaper, but maybe smaller ones. Or home magazines serving the area.

A friend sent me the link to your story. Interesting that you should mention debi Story Maddox & the Denver Post story. If that caught your attention, perhaps you should know that The Gazette in Colorado Springs did a feature on her just a few weeks later. debi has been the subject of 22 newspaper & magazine articles over the years. She is a prolific artist, who has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including one at a Dallas museum, which at the same time featured a retrospective of Norman Rockwell’s work. She has also authored & illustrated two poetry books. A full-color art book containing more than 80 of her paintings has also been published. Three very cool retail establishments in Manitou Springs feature her work. Her unique clothing & jewelry designs are featured at a cool boutique. A cutting-edge gallery retails her jewelry creations. A series of her paintings & her books are sold at a Manitou bookstore. It’s not just the house that got her noticed. She is truly the consummate artist.

  • Excellent point! You have to have the whole package. The way the article was written, the emphasis was on the home. But if the art was stinky, the author probably would not have been interested. Debi sounds like an amazing woman.
