Hallmark of a great collector

by Alyson Stanfield on March 22, 2007

In discussing the impending sale of his prized Mark Rothko painting, David Rockefeller said to The New York Times:

And from time to time when I’m in New York, I go to galleries with
Glenn and John,” he said, referring to Glenn D. Lowry, director of the
Museum of Modern Art, and Mr. Elderfield. “Its not always my taste, but
I’m always open to seeing what’s new.

Isn’t that the hallmark of a great collector? Open to the new. Not wanting to miss what’s out there. He’s 91 years old and still taking it all in!
