LinkedIn and Facebook etiquette

by Alyson Stanfield on September 7, 2008

When you’re inviting people into your LinkedIn network or your Facebook Friends, be courteous.

Unless you’re absolutely 100% positive that your name will be recognized by the recipient, personalize your request rather than using the standard greeting provided by those services.

I had a problem with LinkedIn taking the addresses I had checked for them to use out of my mailbox and garbling them. So PeterPan@aol received an email that said Susan2PeterPan@aol. (those are ficticious names) Their system combined the names in my address book in very strange ways. It was bizarre. I have no idea how many people were offended by it, or turned off from the very unprofessional approach that was LinkedIn’s technical glitch.
