My biggest accomplishment this year has to do with the exact things you speak of in this podcast! I have had a banner year. This is partially due to the fact that I realized how far I have come in my art life and how much I have accomplished overall. This feeling of joy came into full focus when I started to digitize slides of past work this summer. As I saw all my old work on the computer screen, I was in awe. I realized I have such a rich history of art making. I have survived against odds to create a wonderful art life for myself. I agree with you. We have to toot our own horns and pat ourselves on the back often. If I hadn’t done that through the years, I wouldn’t still be making art today!

Two big accomplishments this year – choosing to paint EVERY day (with my ipod) has allowed me to triple my production and double my sales – the act of believing in the business enough to spend time every day in the studio, no matter how tired I am, has been a huge step to get me to where I am today. I’ve missed only 3 days in nearly 16 months. Secondly, being chosen by Art Business News (www.artbusinessnews.com) as an Emerging Artist for November 2008 – it took follow through and initiative, but doesn’t everything that matters require some hard work? I think it’s a great idea to review your accomplishments. It’s so easy to forget all you’ve done over the course of the year. I am working throught Alyson’s book making a plan for myself. As for now, I’m going to make a list of all the good things I’ve created over this year. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the suggestion. It’s so easy to overwhelmed as the new year approaches my all those things I just couldn’t get to. This year, my big accomplishment has been to make a 2000-mile move to a city with more opportunities. It was a tough decision, but I couldn’t be happier.

My biggest accomplishment this year was design oriented but more along the lines of interior design. With a little extra local real estate professional feedback, I was able to stage and sell my condo in Santa Monica for a profit even in this crazy downturned market where nothing had sold in months. I am so relieved to be out of the real estate market right now and I can use my extra energies toward my enjoyable creative pursuits instead of worrying what is happening in the real estate market.

Wow, Alyson! Thank you for this suggestion. It’s been a real eye-opener. My list is long and I haven’t even finished yet. I have taken so many steps this year and had more results than I’d realized. I’ve kept my year-long accomplishments, along with goals for the next year, in a notebook for about 4 years. (That’s when I began doing art full-time.) It really is a great resource to look back and see what you’ve accomplished. My biggest accomplishments this year were getting into several new shows, plus beginning to paint on panels which allowed me to evolve my style a bit.

I think that my biggest accomplishment this year is that I’ve really upped the ante with my marketing efforts. The biggest part of that would be my blog I started in March and the other online connections that I have made. I also joined a networking group where I’ve forced myself to be less shy and meet people in the local art scene.

Remembering the high points on the road to a successful art career can can make the low points less overwhelming. I send out a “collector letter” every fall including news, events, and honors received over the past year, and thank my collectors for their support, and also include a schedule for the coming year. A list of marketing accomplisments will be a great tool to both enjoy and to use in looking ahead. Thanks!
