It's a funny thing about the internet, but it seems the sites that I have spent the least amount of money on get the most traffic...Having a free blog on Blogger still brings in the most amount of traffic, & when I bought a custom domain for that, traffic dropped a bit...
When I got a .tv ending, they gave me a free site which allows for easy Youtube video posting...like 10,000 visitors-apparently having videos is a good thing...
Most of the online galleries I have joined just had too many people for anyone to find me...The exception was one where it was like applying to real gallery, & they only have a dozen other artists- the standout point was that all images are in very high resolution, so it hits the top of the search engines when you type in my name...
Sites that are at all slow to load don't get return visits- even the one with the fabulous high tech moving animations...
There are so many free sites now, why go with someone else's aesthetic? Weebly.com is free , Fotopic.net is free (a photog. site but can adapt nicely), Magix.net is free (a little slow though)...Ecrater.com is free but hasn't taken off yet...
The nice thing about joining any of the free online gallery sites though is it does give you a mental boost & helps you to see what others are doing...Quarterlife is free, for example...
For me, I am finding that galleries are starting to have negative responses to artists selling directly- so I put up a notice saying I still give gallery commission even from online sales...One gallery I applied to which I had learned of here, was immediately turned off by a PayPal button...
So, a word of caution, if you are with a gallery, or applying to one, maybe don't make it look like you will be selling under the table if they take you...

Whenever I am considering joining an online gallery, I always ask about their marketing plans. Too many online galleries take an "if you build it they will come" approach, hoping that the member artists will do all of their marketing. I have no time or energy for this, so I will only join a gallery that will be actively marketing both their site and the members of their site.
