Why Artists Should Have Blogs

I think artist blogs are terrific–IF they’re done right. This means a commitment to posting, linking, responding to comments, etc. This is what we teach in the Blog Triage class (which coincidentally begins tomorrow). Blogging isn’t for everyone, but here are four reasons to have and maintain an artist blog.

Make It Easy for Others to Promote Your Art

Which would you rather embrace: The great publicity, goodwill, and friendships that come when others can promote your art (properly!), or the possibility that someone somewhere at some point might use your images improperly? Do what you can to protect your images properly, but don’t be so fearful that you miss out on opportunities for others to promote your art for you. Make it easy to be talked about!

One artist’s exhibition title plays on that of a popular movie, another artist offers monthly subscriptions for his prints (brilliant!), and a third artist sold 15 paintings at her opening–claiming that my business advice helped her make it a success. Read about them all in this week’s Tweekly.

Conservation of Your Artwork: Intent and Keeping Records

Future generations have no idea what your intent was in making a piece of art. You have to spell it out if it isn’t obvious. If you want your work preserved in a museum one day, make a conservator happy. Keep notes about your working materials, techniques, and intent.
