New Book for Artists’ Self-Promotions

As many of you know, I am in the process of writing a book proposal. My idea is that my book will be a comprehensive guide (if not a system) for self-promotions for artists. It includes stuff from my Shameless Self-Promotion class as well as from my Cultivating Collectors book and more.

In a nutshell, here is how it’s breaking down:

  • PREPARING: Organizing systems, mailing lists.
  • WRITING/SPEAKING:Everything from practicing to your 10-second introduction to your statement to public speaking.
  • PACKAGING: "Branding" your image, printed materials, electronic (e.g. Web sites), advertising, media relations, following up.
  • MEETING/KNOWING/NETWORKING: Why? Who you need to know, etiquette, networking online, community alliances.

Here’s where you come in . . . I’d love your help!

  1. What are your favorite self-promotions books and why?
  2. What format would be most useful for you? I was thinking it would be presented more in bullet points than long passages of text and might have a workbook feel.
  3. What would you like to know–in general–about these topics?
  4. What would you like to know–specifically–about anything pertaining to self-promotions that isn’t on this list?

    How about “how to market yourself if you are in a niche market, for example, children portraits or adult portraits.” Favorite market books are the Tad Crawford books for artist.

  • I like the idea of a workbook! In the beginning I had a hard time trying to figure out what it was I needed to do first, second third etc…

  • I have lots of books although I generally have been following your blog and the one above for ideas and insight into the business.

  • Alyson, I like the blend of story adn workbook, such as in the Artist’s way. Motivating with a good read and success stories gives connection, followed by an action section that is more a workbook. I think it would be really useful to have stages for different budgets, as people are getting started: Do this for $100 or less, upgrade to this for a plan that is under $1000, and then upgrade to the next level, $1000 plus. Where is it really crucial to spend money on self-promotion, and how to get started before the money comes in… Thanks, Carla

    How ’bout pricing?

  • I really like Carla’s idea of offering suggestions and resources for different budget levels. Sometimes for the high-end artwork you’re able to invest more money into marketing those pieces, but for our lower priced items you want some low-cost marketing ideas that are still effective. Although the book is geared toward art marketing specifically – I’ve found that general business marketing ideas are also helpful. So don’t narrow the focus so much that the techniques you discuss won’t translate well to all forms of the art business. For instance, in my line of work as a custom scrapbook designer some might not think of me as a true artist but rather a professional crafter. Or in some aspects of my business I might be considered a retailer. However – I believe that all your art-marketing resources can also be applied to my business if I’m given a generic enough prespective. Can’t wait to see the finished book! ~Pam

  • Note: The book is even narrower than marketing. Its focus is on the self-promotions part of marketing. I think it will be applicable to a wide variety of artists at every point in their careers.
