When You’re Not Ready to Start a Newsletter

Picture_3_1As I mention in Art Marketing Action, a newsletter is a terrific way to stay in touch with your buyers and collectors.

If you can’t commit to starting a newsletter right now, at least do this:

Create a file labeled “Newsletter Ideas.” Stuff it with things you come across that you find interesting; stories you want to tell; tips you’d like to share; and designs you find appealing.

You can also make files in Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, or Entourage to keep your e-ideas. For example, I have folders in Entourage broken down into “topic ideas” and “images to use” for my newsletter. I drop in emails that are relevant. You could do the same thing for your artist newsletter. (Click on the screen shot to see how I save emails in subject folders in Entourage.)

When you need to put together a newsletter, it’s all in one place and ready to go!

  • I agree that it’s best to be prepared and commited when starting a “newsletter.” And following a regular, consistent routine will garner the best results. However, collectors LOVE to hear from artists. I personally feel that it’s better to do SOMETHING to communicate with your prospects than NOTHING. Waiting until everything is perfect, can mean waiting for too long. Even if your start out sending something that is not as regular and/or polished as you would like. Start out by sending notices of new works posted on your website, send holiday greetings, send links to interesting articles about art. I think that people understand that you are a visual artist first and not necessarily a writer. As such, I believe they will be somewhat forgiving if the newsletters don’t come every week or are not quite as polished as you (or they would like.) Of course, it is always far better to be prepared and committed as Alyson has pointed out in her newsletter.

  • I recenlty started an e-newsletter and found Artbiz to be a very useful resource to get me going. I have packed my e-newsletter with my latest news, but I also promote other quilt artists work. I hope that my e-newsletter will become a useful resource of information for quilt artists.

  • Last month I started a newsletter to send by email to all my collectors and people interested in my art. The content is not only about me and my news, but also art events around town and worldwide. I also have some art history, tips for taking care of art, recipe for the current month holyday, tips on travelling to cities of art and so on.The feedback was very positive, it’s work to put it together but is a good tool for keeping in touch.

  • I used to do a one-page, front and 1/3 of the back,newlsetter via snail-mail, but when my mailing list grew to over 1000, it was very expensive. Also, I was told that it contained too much information so it was “too hard” to read. I consolodated and now send only a postcard with reminders to sign up for new classes, come in to see new art, and include a coupon as a “thank-you” to these repeat customers and that seems to work just as well at bringing people in as the newsletter, though there is no room for “chit-chat”. It saves me about half the cost of the folded newsletter, as well as quite a bit of time, since I just need to put on postage and address labels and not also stuff into envelopes or use a sticker to keep it closed. I haven’t tried an e-mail version. That may be next on my list, unless the “free” e-mail service changes!

  • I have an unusual e-newsletter: Art, Nature, Creativity, Life. It probably breaks every one of Alyson’s guidelines, but I have almost 600 subscribers. It comes out when I am in a writing mood and is definitely a “soft sell.” I use it to define who I am as an artist and to provide background for my artwork.
